Stipend Procedures

What is a stipend?

A fixed sum of money is paid one time or periodically as monetary support to defray living expenses during an academic appointment for participating in a non-service activity. Stipend payments are not compensation for services rendered; therefore, they are not allowable on federal awards unless the agreement aims to train selected participants, and the sponsoring agency approves the charge per federal guidance.

The University issues student stipend payments to currently enrolled students where there is not a work requirement. Departments must submit payment requests for work requirements through Payroll Services.

The University may also issue stipends to non-employee participants who do not have work requirements.

Stipends are not gifts, prizes, awards, or honoraria. Please note that URECA awards are stipends, not awards.

Stipends are considered taxable income. The recipient of a stipend should expect to receive a 1099 Form from the University after the end of the year.

All stipends for students are reviewed by Financial Aid

You should complete the Stipend and Fellowship Payments Dynamic Form. PLEASE NOTE: Employees are not typically given payment in the form of a stipend. In rare cases, an employee can be paid a stipend and would be paid through Human Resources.
